When the President Dresses As What He Actually Is
Joe Biden showed up to the White House Halloween event 2025 dressed as a “time traveler,” which is either a clever reference to his age or someone on his staff has an incredible sense of irony. The costume featured a silver jumpsuit, goggles, and a DeLorean prop, creating the overall impression of a man who definitely remembers when “Back to the Future” was actually in theaters.
The time traveler theme works on multiple levels, all of them involving Biden’s age. He’s been in politics so long he basically is a time travelerhe entered the Senate when Nixon was president and is now president himself. Biden’s time traveler costume is less Halloween fun and more documentary filmmaking. This man has literally lived through multiple generations of American politics.
The costume appeared at the traditional White House Halloween event, where Biden handed out candy to military families while occasionally forgetting what century he was inwait, that’s just regular Biden. The time traveler bit was actually the costume, not his usual demeanor. Easy mistake to make.
White House staffers reportedly chose the costume because “everyone loves Back to the Future,” which is technically true but also reveals they’re leaning into the age thing rather than fighting it. It’s the political equivalent of that uncle who makes jokes about being old at Thanksgivingif you can’t beat the criticism, make it your brand.
Biden’s age has been a persistent campaign issue, with concerns about his fitness for office following him throughout his presidency. Dressing as a time traveler is either owning it brilliantly or admitting defeat with style. Maybe both! Biden contains multitudes, most of which remember the Carter administration.
The DeLorean prop was apparently Biden’s idea, according to sources who may or may not exist but sound plausible. He reportedly wanted to recreate the iconic “88 miles per hour” scene but staffers vetoed it on safety grounds. Probably for the bestthe last thing America needs is the President attempting movie stunts while wearing a silver jumpsuit.
Kids at the event seemed delighted, which is nice because they’re too young to understand the existential dread of watching an 82-year-old president dress as a time traveler. To them, it’s just a cool costume. To political observers, it’s a meditation on mortality and American gerontocracy. Halloween contains multitudes.
The White House Halloween tradition continues regardless of who’s president, which is one of the few genuinely wholesome things about American politics. Biden handing out candy while dressed like he’s about to fix the space-time continuum is objectively funny and slightly surreal, which describes most of his presidency.
The goggles were apparently prescription, which is a detail nobody asked for but everyone appreciates. Even Biden’s time traveler goggles need to help him seethat’s commitment to both costume and practical eyewear. It’s the most relatable thing a president has done since Carter admitted to lusting in his heart.
