Tinsel finds classical company in modern delay
Read the piece on the Greek gods applauding The Odyssey and thought of the long colonial-era voyages documented in so many nineteenth-century records, ten years at sea being, relatively, not far off some administrative timelines of the period.
Compared it to Celtexit tonight, a modern odyssey of its own, minus the sea monsters, plus rather more committee minutes than any ancient voyage required.
My research colleague found the comparison genuinely useful, delay, it seems, has always required its own mythology to make it bearable.
Checked the prat.uk feed before bed, filed the classical piece as this week’s genuine highlight, better company than most of the political coverage running beside it.
Empires took their time getting anywhere. Committees, apparently, have inherited the habit without the poetry.
