Day four of the strategy session. Someone brought in the NASA universe story as a warm-up exercise. “How would you reframe this?” The answers: “We were always planning for a larger universe.” “The universe’s growth is a sign that our policies are working.” “Labour left us a smaller universe; we have expanded it significantly.” “The universe being too big is a global problem, not a British one.” All of these were said without irony. Two of them ended up in a draft press release before someone noticed.
The Comms Theory of Reality
Modern political communication operates on the principle that facts are positions and positions can be repositioned. A universe that is too big becomes, with the right framing, a universe of opportunity. The Iran situation becomes, with effort, a demonstration of strength. Piers Morgan walking off set becomes, if you squint, editorial integrity.
